safety
We would like the the parents to know that - wherever possible - everything has been put in place to ensure the boys' safety. 2nd Rondebosch Scout Troop is led by six Rondebosch Old Boys from E'12 and E'03 who cumulatively have more than 75 years of experience on Table Mountain, along with more than 40 years of experience planning and running outdoor activities for teenage boys. We understand the risks of being on the mountain, and although we will not be co-ordinating the logistics during the hikes, we have consulted extensively with the school to plan an enjoyable and safe trip for all.

We have considered the available routes extensively to decide on one which will be both safe and within all boys' capabilities, and will mark all places where more than one path exists with the above route markers so that getting lost is very unlikely. The guides going with the groups also know the routes and have Wilderness First Aid training, while some staff and medical supplies will be transported up and will permanently stay at the Scout Hut for the week of holidays.
While the emphasis is that the boys do the packing, preparing and decision-making themselves so that they get a feel for what the Rondebosch Journey will be like, they have also been advised that when it comes to safety, the guide's decision is final and he will lead the situation from there. All boys will be briefed as to how to prepare, but one of the most important things risk-wise is to ensure that your son has all the strictly necessary gear and nothing more. As long as the boys are comfortable on the hike - which largely comes down to how light their packs are - they will have an enjoyable adventure.
Our Scout Troop often has weekend hikes on Table Mountain and surrounds, and has a close affiliation with the Rondebosch Outdoor Society, so if your son would like to do some more hikes in preparation for the Journey, you are welcome to get in touch with us.
